In August 2011 Carol Vorderman’s report – A world-class mathematics education for all our young people – was published.

For those who struggled with Maths in secondary school, who are struggling now or who have children who are finding Maths difficult, the report makes particularly interesting reading. I recommend that all parents with school age children should read this report. As the report makes clear, a sound mathematics education is an essential for everyone.

It doesn’t matter what political persuasion you are, political views do not come into it – it assesses:

  • where mathematics education currently stands in England,
  • where it needs to be in order for us to compete internationally on an economic basis, and
  • what is needed on an individual basis for students to be mathematically literate, and so able to fulfil their potential in future life.

It then recommends the critically important changes needed in order to provide a world-class mathematics education for all our young people.
